Education

The quality of education in the United States is one of the poorest in the 1st world. This is not for lack of funding. Per pupil spending in the US is the highest in the world. Since the Department of Education began operating in 1980, the quality has continued to decline while the cost steadily rises.

The Dept. of Education needs to be eliminated. It hasn’t worked. It has done nothing more than drive up administrative costs while lowering acceptable standards. That by itself though isn’t enough.

Compulsory education needs to be abandoned. Not everyone is able to excel in a public school setting, and focusing on those that are forced to attend doesn’t just lower the quality of education for everyone else – it also jeopardizes their safety. The current policy of financially rewarding districts for putting butts in seats isn’t good for anyone but the overpaid administrators that reap the monetary benefits.

We also need to have more options. It needs to be easier for parents to home school their children without government harassment. Tax free Education Savings Accounts should be permitted for both k-12 and advanced education. Online education needs to be an option for folks that don’t function well in traditional school environments. Public schools need the same freedom for methods of instruction and curriculum as private schools, and private schools need be allowed to compete with public schools and make both stronger.
