While the Constitution gives the federal government authority to regulate citizenship, it has no such provisions for immigration. Congress has unfortunately ignored this limitation of power and created a huge mess of illegitimate laws and regulations. Quotas, DACA, expired visas, expensive yet ineffective walls, families torn apart, and a host of other problems are the result. Both sides are responsible for making the mess, but each uses the issue to attack the other. Neither of the two old parties has any desire to actually fix the problems.
I would work to at least return immigration to the Ellis Island type standards that made America great. Screen out those that are known threats or carry contagious diseases. Everyone else is welcome to pursue the American dream and add their value to our melting pot.
